In the context of communication skills, I want to tell you that delivering the message in the way you want to deliver is not communication, but delivering the message in the way the listener can understand exactly the meaning you want the listener to understand is communication. I’m not going academically for you to make you understand about verbal or non-verbal or other types of communication skills, but I will give you the practical things to consider to change the perception of methods of improving communication skills. 1. Ideas for communication skills and learning time
It is always a great idea to have personal approaches rather than general approaches to follow when you are in the process of improving your communication skills. It is a fact that many general ideas work wonderfully well for many people in the world, but it is also a better and an effective way to follow the personal approaches to learn a particular set of skills.
If you feel that you have some approaches different from the world, then you must follow them to improve your communication skills. For example, you are somebody who thinks that you are learning communication skills for the betterment of your future, so you must learn because you have the approach of aiming for the future rather than the present.
On the other hand, you may be somebody who thinks that now you are learning because you have the requirement of communication skills so you must learn because you have the approach of aiming for the present which will automatically lead to the betterment of the future as well. So you should decide according to what you think and what ideas you have, but the best thing is learning communication skills either now or later on, but he who does the right thing at the right time, is able to gain extensive benefits.
2. Pressurize your tongue but not too much
While you are in the process of practicing English, it is always vital for you to give pressure to your tongue so that it may become comfortable in uncomfortable words and sentences. Practicing tongue twisters is always going to be a boon for you, but pressurizing your tongue unnecessarily all the time is also something that you should always try to steer clear of.
Do you want your tongue to become relaxed and free from any pressure? Then repeat and repeat those difficult words which are hard for your tongue as many times as you can in your mind as well as aloud when you are away from somebody’s attention because it may look awkward for them.
3. Focus more on the message than the language
You have the right intention of improving the communication skills, but many times it happens that you are focusing more on the language than the message, and consequently, you are drifting away from the rhythm of your message.
Communication skills demand the clarity of message more than anything else, but it doesn’t mean to keep the language completely aside. While you have full control on the language, it is crucial that you deliver the message in the best possible manner.
4. Don’t brush aside the importance of listening
I can’t emphasize more than just by saying this that listen and listen and give yourself the time for listening. Let me tell you again that listen and listen as much as it may be possible for you. So this is the level of emphasis that I have been putting for you so that you may never forget the importance of listening.
Listening makes you think, listening makes you speak, listening makes you analyze, listening makes you strategize, listening makes you maintain patience, and listening makes you think for yourself and for others as well. You just can’t imagine how important the listening can be until the time you do this yourself on a regular basis. And the best thing is that all these benefits of listening will just make you improve your communication skills and that’s what we’re aiming for.
Aim for excellence rather than perfection in the usage of grammar
Is everyone who has excellent communication skills a grammarian? Does using perfect grammar mean excellent communication skills? Aiming for excellent grammar rather than perfect grammar should be the thing to follow for all those speaking enthusiasts who want to excel in communication skills.
It should be kept in mind that you do not make mistakes in common grammatical rules such as tenses, modals, and some general grammatical rules, but making yourself befuddled in the sea of grammar may mar your planning of becoming an excellent communicator because you may always be occupied with the grammatical rules and may never think of making and following other strategies to help you become a master communicator.
So follow all the ordinary and even the deep grammatical rules to a great extent but never go into the confusion of complicated rules where there is even a chance of argument over whether a particular grammatical rule is right or wrong. Don’t pressurize yourself too much with the grammatical rules to forget the other strategies of communication skills to excel in speaking.
