Everybody wants to have proficiency in different types of work and reading is also not different. When it comes to speed reading, of course, practice is the thing that comes for the first time in the mind of every reader but there are other ways that can really help when it comes to speed reading. We have to understand that practice is the number one thing but we also have to understand other things that can really help in speed reading.
How to increase your reading speed?
1. Understanding vocabulary and difficult words
This is the first problem that readers face because they’re not able to understand certain vocabulary and they also have issues in going ahead with the difficult words. Because of this thing, they’re able to get stuck and they don’t make themselves comfortable to move ahead with the content that they are going to read. So, it is important for the readers to understand the importance of improvement of the number of words they memorize and they also need to pay attention, especially to the difficult words.
2. Elimination of subvocalization
It is the habit of pronouncing each word silently while reading and subvocalization can be reduced to make sure that you are going to focus on the group of words consciously rather than going through the individual words every time you read. You can make sure to use the indications of your finger to make it possible for you to eliminate subvocalization to some extent.
3. Chunking and the use of a pointer
The use of a pointer, pencil, or pen can certainly help and when it comes to chunking, it is the method of reading in which you go through the phrases rather than word-by-word reading. Chunking refers to the chunks or the phrases of words and once you start following this process, it will make sure that your reading improves even in a better way.
4. Distraction-free environment
This is the most crucial thing because once you are distracted by something, of course, it will impact the way you read a particular type of content. This is why you have to make yourself sit comfortably in a place where you feel that there is nothing of distraction. This will certainly improve your reading speed.
5. Pausing at the right place
You have to take pauses while reading because that’s one of the things which can help you to comprehend the matter as well. Only reading is not going to be the solution because, with this, comprehension is the most vital thing. Every reader wants to read with speed along with understanding the content and that’s what happens when you learn how to pause at the right place.
