A brief history of Red Fort

The style of innovative architecture of the fort influenced other gardens and buildings in Delhi, Kashmir, Punjab, Rajasthan, and elsewhere. Architect Ustad Ahmad Lahori is given credit for the design of the Red Fort, and this particular architect also constructed the Taj Mahal of India.

The construction of the Red Fort began on the 13th of May 1638, which fell in the sacred month of Muharram, and its construction was completed on the 6th of April 1648. This particular fort is along the Yamuna River in Delhi. Shah Jahan made the Red Fort as the palace of his fortified capital known as Shahjahanabad.

Mughal Empire had the ownership of the Red Fort of Delhi from 1638 to 1760, and then it was Maratha Empire who had its ownership in 1760 as well as from 1771 to 1803. Sikh Confederacy also had its ownership in 1783, and the East India Company had control over the fort from 1803 to 1857. British Empire had its ownership from 1857 to 1947, and from 1947 to the present, the Government of India has its ownership.

 

The architecture and major structures of Red Fort

The area of the Red Fort of Delhi is 254.67 acres, covered by 2.41 kilometers of defensive walls all around. Double domes of the Red Fort, floral decorations, and the marble epitomize the later Mughal architecture. The height of the fort varies because its height is 18 meters on the riverside while it is 33 meters on the city side. As far as the major structures of the Red Fort of Delhi are concerned, the audience halls, the imperial apartments, the main gates, the ramparts are the most important structures. To name a few, Delhi Gate, Lahori Gate, Naubat Khana, Nahr-i-Bihisht, Mumtaz Mahal, Diwani-i-Aam, Diwane-i-Khas, Moti Masjid, Prince’s Quarter are some of the structures of the Red Fort.
