Interjection In English Language
A word which is used to express a sudden feeling or emotion is known as an interjection.
Some facts regarding interjection:
- There is no grammatical function of any interjection in the construction of a sentence.
- Interjections are used according to the context to express sudden feelings and emotions.
- There is an exclamatory sign (!) that you have to use after you use a word as an interjection.
- The words of interjections have to do with feelings rather than meanings.
Interjections are used in many different situations and these situations have been mentioned as follows:
1. Happiness/Joy: Hurray! Yippee
For example
Hurray! We have won the match
Yippee! Let’s enjoy the summer vacation now.
2. Approval: Well done! Bravo!
For example
Well done! You have done an excellent job.
Bravo! All of you have done excellently well to achieve it.
3. Fear: Ouch! Oh!
For example
Ouch! I’ve cut my finger by mistake.
Oh! It’s very dark in the street.
4. Surprise: OMG! Oho! Wow!
For example
OMG! What a wonderful gift you have brought for me!
Oho! They have got 100 out of 100 in the exam.
Wow! This red car is absolutely phenomenal.
5. Attention: Behold! Look! Listen!
For example
Behold! The decoration is just beautiful.
Look! They are coming from there.
6. Sorrow: Alas! Oh! Ah!
For example
Ah! All their plans to go abroad have failed.
7. Greetings: Hi! Hello! Hey! Welcome!
For example
Hi! Where have you been these days?
Hey! Where were you yesterday?
8. Shock: What!
For example
What! He has gone to a foreign country without informing anyone.
9. Anger: What!
For example
What! You’ve made this mistake.
People use words related to interjection in English language a lot and if you really want to make the words of interjection perfect, then you will have to do the practice of such words in your writing and speaking.
