Before understanding the kinds of preposition, let’s understand the basic meaning of a preposition.

A word which is used to show the relationship of a noun or a pronoun with other words in a sentence is known as a preposition and it is also used to show time, place, directions, etc.

For example

I live in Delhi.

I wake up at 5 O’clock.

 

Types of prepositions

1. Simple preposition: It refers to those prepositions which are short and simple.

For example

To, from, with, of, at, in, on, etc.

I live in Mumbai.

I live at Saurabh Vihar.

I reached school on time. (exactly on time)

I reached school in time. (Just before time)

 

2. Double preposition: It refers to those prepositions which are made by combining two simple prepositions and they are written together without separation.

For example

Into, within, onto, upto, upon, etc.

He jumped into the well.

They were onto my plans to deliver the project.

They were onto the branch of the tree to entertain others.

 

3. Compound preposition: It refers to those prepositions which are made up of two or more prepositional words. Compound prepositions also include those words which prefix “a” and “be”.

For example

In addition to, in regard to, in place of, in spite of, according to, in accordance with, among, beside, before, behind, along, across, etc

In accordance with his opinion, India is going to win the next match.

 

4. Participle preposition: It refers to those prepositions which normally come in  ‘ing’  form.

For example

Regarding, Concerning, during, considering, barring, including, etc.

We have got the notice regarding tomorrow’s holiday.

5. Phrase prepositions: These are those prepositions which have a group of words including prepositions.

For example

In spite of, in addition to, instead of,  according to, in accordance with, because of, in order to.

In spite of doing hard work, he failed.

Instead of tea, I  would like to take coffee.

He is doing the work according to the instructions.

 

6. Disguised/hidden preposition: It refers to a preposition which is used indirectly without a full word.

For example

I  wake up at  5 O’clock. (O’=Of)
